Rare flower from Mauritius

I had read in the local paper today that this plant (Nesocodon mauritianus) was flowering for the first time in Bicton Park so decided to go and see it.  In fact it is very rare and is listed as Critically Endangered and on the Red List with an estimated number of 15 plants living in the wild.  It is a small plant, see extras with the flower hanging down. It is found high up on the cliff sides of mountains in Mauritius where the consistent moisture running down encourages growth.  It is one of only a few flowers that have coloured nectar (deep red) which is thought to attract the native Gecko (Phelsuma ornate) which acts as a pollinator.

This plant was grown from seed supplied by Kew Gardens and when it was first discovered in the 1970's there was only one known plant.  Cuttings were taken but did not survive.  It wasn't until 1985 that a further expedition found a seed head with several hundred seeds inside and plants were successfully grown on.

A much cooler day today with a fair amount of cloud and even a few very light showers.  Will we get to see the blood moon later, maybe as the clouds are clearing a bit.
