Life through the lens...

By ValC

Another cycling hero.

This person is probably not known to many people outside Yorkshire, but
Beryl Burton OBE, 1937 - 1996
dominated British women’s cycling from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.
122 national titles over 5 decades.
She set a women’s record for12 hour time-trial, 277 .25 miles. A mark that surpassed the men’s record of the time by 0.73 miles and was not beaten by a woman until 13 Aug. 2017 - 50 years later. ( surpassed by a man in 1969)

My photo was taken in Morley this morning, where there is a Beryl Burton Memorial Garden. Only small, but nicely kept, and a lovely mural .A very peaceful spot.
Hidden up a little alley, behind the Yorshire Bank.

Just some of her achievements:

10 miles. 21.25 ( 1973) stood for 20 years.
25 miles. 53. 21 ( 1976). stood for 20 years
30 miles. 1.08.36 ( 1981) stood for 10 years
50 miles 1.51.30 ( 1976) stood for 20 years
100 miles. 3.55.05 ( 1968) stood for 18 years
12 Hour 277.25m. ( 1967) stood for 50 years
3000 metre Track Pursuit World Champion 1959 ( the first of five victories)
Road Racing World Champion twice
British Time Trials Best All Rounder 1959 to 1983.

Beryl lived in Morley, and died age 58 due to heart failure ( she had had heart problems all her life) while out on her bike, delivering invitations to her 59th Birthday celebrations.

A dedicated lady. Cycling was her life, as well as being a wife and mother.
Today her name would be known worldwide.
