Pignut
Lovely walk this afternoon, just in time before it got dark at 4:30pm - which is ridiculous (and a bit depressing).
Ventured to a new park which was very wet and muddy, but so peaceful.
This is Pignut (Conopodium majus) veiwed against a grey, rain laden sky. It's name is due its popularity with pigs, and an underground part that looks like a chesnut. Also known as Saint Anthony's nut, for Anthony the Great or Anthony of Padua, both patron saints of swineherds.
Also mentioned by Shakespeare in The tempest...
"I prithee, let me bring thee where crabs grow; and I with my long nails will dig thee pignuts"
Isn't life fascinating?
