Diary of an Edinburgher

London Day Five

A great day out, but too many photos!

We abandoned all ideas of going to Hampton Court as intended. Just too hot. Another time. Instead, we went back to Windsor, it being a twenty minute drive, and it's small, manageable and picturesque.

We got to the car park by the river easily (thanks, satnav) and wandered along the river. Oh, look! There's a ferry boat about to leave! (Extra 1) So we hopped on it and had a lovely ride along the Thames, past Eton, Windsor Racecourse and lots of posh houses. A great view of the castle when we came back.

The town was mobbed, as usual, and the queue to get into the castle grounds stretched right around the road for miles quite far. We had no intention of going in anyway. But there were lots of people in fancy dress in front of the castle (Extra 2) ringing bells and yelling at a small group of people under a tent. Yes, it was a Town Crier competition. And it went on all day. Wonderful costumes (Extras 3 & 4) but they were all, well, old codgers, so I hope they were being looked after. We did the obligatory selfie in front of the castle gates.

We had a wander around, and eventually headed for our favourite - Carluccio's - for lunch (Extra 5). Smashing. I insisted that JR have a wine with her lunch, and I’d drive back. How magnanimous. We're very pleased that a branch will be opening in Edinburgh soon.

Finding our way back to the car park was easy - just looked on the map and tapped on 'Parked Car'. Love the sat nav.

Last day of our hot holiday tomorrow, and we have a treat in store...
