2018 Monday — PoeTRY Workshop

We attended a poetry workshop this morning at the Cayucos Public Library. The workshop leader told everyone it was her first time leading a poetry workshop, and we all thought she did wonderful as a leader.

One style of poetry she exposed us to and taught us about is “concrete poems.” Wikipedia explains it this way, “Concrete, pattern, or shape poetry is an arrangement of linguistic elements in which the typographical effect is more important in conveying meaning than verbal significance.”

Then we all spent 10 minutes or so trying to write one. I took a photo of mine and included a small photo of one of the samples we were shown. Reading our poems outloud to the group was scary, but very very encouraging.

I went to the workshop not sure I would enjoy it; mostly because I’m an introvert. The 2+ hours created lots of inspiration and also the motivation to keep working on my writing, and especially to continue with poetry.

My summer break is getting short.
