Night blooming cereus
Went up to Tantalus after driving by Punahou School and seeing their cereus fence blooming, but no easy place to pull over. Haven't been up Tantalus Drive in a while - found yellow ginger blooming profusely and some places to revisit with hanging curtains of vines. Stopped at the lookout and whilst I was snapping this one, heard the noise of an engine coming up the hill. As it passed behind me, I turned around just as his rear bumper vibrated right off the car, leaving it in the middle of the lane. He didn't even falter but kept going, and I could hear his roar as he continued up the switchbacks hill. No other cars came up for a while, so I walked over and moved it to the side of the road - and was amused to discover that he'd lost his license plate too. Hope he came back.
Full moon is August 26, these should be ready.
Easy pickings bottle litter netted me 85 cents and one brandy bottle (no redemption).
Update on Hurricane Lane @ 1800 hours on Tuesday 8/21 says it appears to be following a path similar to Hurricane Iniki in 1992 that badly damaged Kauai. The storm was traveling west and expected to pass below us, no problem. But it now appears to be curving northwest. Wed/Thurs , it should be off the Big Island and move down the chain. Schools closed as a precaution for Hawaii and Maui counties.
