TRANSPORTER BUNGEE
Bungee or not to bungee . . .
Welcome to the iconic Teesside Transporter Bridge, 101 years young and still working. Chris Rea tells the story of the River Tees in his song Steel River and I too was born and raised in the area.
I was born and raised on steel river
I see it all like it was yesterday
Ships and Bridges they were all delivered
From Sydney Harbour to the Cisco Bay . . .
Steel River - Chris Rea
The Bridge is becoming one of the most famous bungee jump sites in the world, but I restricted my activity today to climbing the 210 steps to the top with my friend Howard. We then took the long slow walk to the middle, across to the other side and back down again.
This is the furthest downstream bridge across the River Tees UK, connecting Middlesbrough, on the south bank, to Port Clarence, on the north bank.
It really is a transporter bridge, carrying a travelling 'gondola', suspended from the bridge, across the river in 90 seconds.
FACTS - overall the length of the bridge is 851 feet (259 m), leaving a span between the centres of the towers of 580 feet (180 m). The overall height is 225 feet (69 m).
It is the largest operational transporter bridge in the world !
I will be missing for a week or so on a short holiday (without computer !) so I will have to back-blip and catch up with you all next week. Have a grand week and weekend all and thank you for your many much appreciated comments of late.
