Change Bridge

.. Today we escaped the rubble and dust and took a trip to Marple to see the Peak Forest Canal with its 16 locks and aqueduct.
This image is a change bridge, a cleverly designed sloping arrangement, which means that horses, should they need to change to the towpath on the other bank, do not need their ropes unhitching.
Everything about the lock system is so cleverly designed.
I should probably tell you more, but we were out in torrential rain and arrived home beyond cold and wet. (Some of us were wetter than others... If anyones waterproofs were going to let in the rain I’d have put money on it being mine, and I’d have been right!).
It was well worth getting soaked for and we shall certainly go again, and see more of the aqueduct. (Not as impressive perhaps, quite (?) as the one at Chirk, for which we have a special fondness, but impressive nevertheless).

Time to sit by the fire I think.
