Hoverflies
Its been a poor summer here for Hoverflies. Many of the plants which they like such as Ragwort and Knapweed more or less aborted their flowers because of the drought.
2017 had been a good year with some unusual specimens. I even bought a book on British Hoverflies to help with identification but I have used it very little this Summer.
So I was pleased to see this one this morning. I think it is a Drone fly. A variety of Hoverfly called Eristalis tenax. But I will be happy to be corrected if I am wrong. It is one of the commonest insects in the world I believe.
