Henceforth!
We took the train up the valley to Skipton today and had a wander around the Castle, somewhere we haven't visited for too long. The last castle to remain loyal to Charles 1 and hold out for three years (!) against the Roundheads, it left us wondering how they smuggled in food supplies over that period. The Castle walls are several feet thick and must have taken some building. We spotted lots of different mason marks on the stonework, so much pride was felt in the construction, ensuring they were paid for the dressed stone (oops, thanks for the historic correction Tony!)
A visit to the Gift Shop in search of postcards and huge cream/jam filled scones in the Tearoom and we emerged on to Skipton High Street to enjoy the varied market stalls ranged on both sides of the road. Then it was back on the train and home.
The title of my blip is the motto of the Cliffords, once residents/owners of the Castle. If you look closely on my blip you will see it writ in stone on the gatehouse: Des Or Mais
