Sooty Copper butterfly
Backblip
Bergerac - Day #4
Today we went on a "birds and butterflies" day which was organised by the HPB with a local guide. We were the only ones signed up and had a wonderful day with David Simpson, an English guy who has spent his whole life in wildlife and conservation, and the past 15 years living in the Dordogne. He is now semi- retired but does some guiding and has written the odd book/article about the area and butterflies in particular.
The birds were not as numerous as I was hoping but the butterflies were spectacular and far easier to find. Today's blip is of a small brown/orange butterfly which is quite common apparently, even if we only saw one! It's the sooty copper and was beautiful.
We saw at least 12 other varieties including various blues, fritillaries and a swallowtail - I LOVED it!
My extra is the black winged kite which was a treat to see. We were out in 30 degree heat again from 9:15 until around 17:30 with a stop at Issigeac for lunch.
A wonderful day made special by having a our own private guide and him being so knowledgeable about butterflies :)
