New Islington Marina
Today’s the day .................... for posh moorings
This where we found ourselves - at the end of a very wet day - in the Ancoats district of Manchester. Refurbished textile mills rub shoulders with new-build highrise apartments but everything is in the best possible taste – and no doubt, very expensive to acquire. Here at the New Islington Marina you could buy a town house with a parking space outside for your boat – and all kept secure behind a swing bridge.
Some of the older buildings give clues to their past histories. A carved inscription above the canalside entrance to Royal Mill tells you that the King and Queen ‘popped in’ on the 19th November 1942. And there are tell-tale signs in the brickwork showing where subterranean arms once led into mills.
A fascinating part of Manchester to explore .........................
