Books.(Duties of a Footman)
Well this is the new bookcase.( Not sure why many of you wanted to see it!)
It has been fasten to the wall as instructed, so if it falls over, the wall comes too!!
( I hope not!!)
We could have done with one at least twice as big! Still a lot of books in cupboards.
It has taken me ages to sort through them, and decide which we don't neeed any more.
The trouble is, they bring back memories, and I start reading them!
Some very battered and worn, but can't bare to part with them.
There's "Grand'pop's Book of Fun". A very large, thin paperback, belonging to my father. Wonderful funny pictures by Lawson Wood, of monkies, and bears, and lots of other animals, with funny stories to match. Always brings a smile to my face!
Grandmother's "Model Cookery Book" which starts "The destiny of nations" says Brillat Savarin, "depends on their diet."
Then goes on with Hints for Housekeepers, Duties of the Housemaid, and Duties of the Footman.
A bit like reading something from Downton Abbey!
Also, my father's collection of Winston Churchill's memoirs of the Second World War, which I can remember he got in instalments, sent through the post, starting in 1948 and the last one ( of six) in 1954.
The first cost 25 shillings and the last 30 shillings!
Several Rupert Annuals. I loved those!
Little Thomas the Tank Engine books which we bought for our first little boy.
(Now 43!)
The list is endless, but how I have enjoyed all those memories, and now will be reading some of the books again.
I really do need to know what my Footman should be doing!!!
