A la Ronde
"We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims."
R. Buckminster Fuller
By way of a change we're heading home via Plymouth, south of the moors around Exeter, rather than taking the usual (for us) northerly route. This gives us the opportunity of visiting somewhere a bit different; A la Ronde, a stunning sixteen sided house near Exmouth. This also allows me to break the journey for a great Sunday lunch at the Puffing Billy at Exton. But the house - an eighteenth century home for two single cousins following their 'grand tour' of Europe; wealthy and reputedly increasingly eccentric they nevertheless created a masterpiece of a house with rooms to track the sunlight across the sky throughout the day, bringing light into each room in an era before electric light. As the sunlight moved around, so they moved from room to room.
