Poarch Creek Powwow

Thanksgiving today, and we did the Poarch Creek Powwow like last year. We were kinda out of options this year so decided that we had a rather nice time last year so we'd do it again.

Didn't really help that we had a mooch round a foreclosure on the way out of town, which took longer than expected. We might get a viewing tomorrow.

But that pushed our time, plus we missed a left turn, and started touring the back roads of Alabama. Eventually made our way to Poarch but missed the grand opening ceremony.

However we did get to watch the earlier stages of the competition. From what I can tell there are several dances, traditional, grass, and fancy (each with their own costume), the ladies have an extra dance called a jingle dance (dress full of bits of metal that jingle when they dance), and you then have the different age groups, pre-teens, teens, adult & golden adults. And obviously mens and womens.

So all in all there are quite a lot of dance offs, and quite a visual day if you can keep up with it all.

And then there are various different drum groups, who also compete against each other. Their competition is used for the music for the dancing competition.

Great day, especially pleased with this shot, especially since it's from my crappy Canon 80-200 bag dweller.
