Common Enchantments

They might be Scots

We drove up to Walnut Grove Plantation near Moore, South Carolina today to see the demonstration of life in camps for the soldiers during the American Revolution which occurred from 1775 to 1783.   The home was the residence of Charles Moore and his family who were farmers but were active in the Patriot Militia.   I learned  the militia was the equivalent of the National Guard today, all volunteers who would help fight when the time came.   The Moore's were known to hide other soldiers from the Loyalist army at the their home.

Of course, I had to talk to some of the people, especially asking about uniforms and clothing they wore.  One group had on green jackets which were Loyalists to the crown of King George.   They were the militia and the regular army had the red uniforms.    The Patriots also wore some green jackets sometimes and the regular army ended up with blue jackets.     I wondered aloud how they could ever tell who was on the opposite side because they all wore the same type of clothes.    He told me the units were so small they all knew each other.

We found out a major reenactment with hundreds of people and the horses will be held Nov 3 at Camden which is only an hour away.   Always a sight to witness when the horses are part of the drama.       I also learned that the British defeated the Patriots at Camden in 1780 and they also controlled the port city of Charleston and Savannah in Georgia.

However, we all know how the story ended!

Interesting day!  We did not stay but maybe 2 hours as it was so hot again today!  These guys may have been the "coolest" guys in the militia!
