Blackhall Yard

Todays only photo of a very wet "yard" in Kendal,  on my way to collect a lovely new duvet.  Have decided the old feather duvet is too heavy for my sore leg,  and as the new bed cost a fortune it can have an expensive down duvet to match. I need to remove the price tag before Mr P sees it.  
Kendal has a lot of "yards". Perhaps this is the  Cumbrian version of the twitterns we had in Kent.  I have heard them called ginnels too . Is a yard a ginnel?
