Museum of the Moon
Alex, Ben and I visited Peterborough Cathedral this afternoon to see two exhibitions with a space theme - Tim Peakes's Soyuz space capsule (see extra) and the Museum of the Moon, an installation by the artist Luke Jerram consisting of a 7m scale model of the moon, with detailed NASA imagery on the surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.
It was good to see so many people enjoying the exhibitions, with all ages represented from toddlers to the elderly. I chose my main image because I felt that the 21st century artwork provided an interesting juxtaposition to the stunning decorated ceiling of the central tower, which dates back to the 13th century. There's a closer view of the ceiling in the extras.
The exhibitions are part of the Cathedrals' 900th birthday celebrations. I'm not religious, but I love the Cathedral and it plays an important part in the culture of the city. It was really excellent to see it holding exhibitions with a scientific focus and hopefully this will have attracted people who wouldn't otherwise visit.
