Iceland to Lancashire

One of the joys of this time of year is the arrival of the wintering geese, their skeins across the sky and their noisy calling. And here a large group are wheeling around, seeking to land near others on the ground.

There are now over 12000 pink footed geese in West Lancashire, focussed in and around Martin Mere. I am still amazed at bird migration. These geese have bred in Iceland and Greenland, and come here this month to enjoy our milder winter climate.

West Lancashire is one of the most productive for farming in the country, and has big skies. When we left home it had stopped raining but was still dull. When we arrived at Martin Mere the sun had come out. The skies were clear (extra) but then it became quite interesting (second extra)
