Shift

There’s a moment when the balance shifts
And autumn slips its mooring from the summer passed
The silence holds it’s whispered song
For now erelong the first herald’s blast
Will gather soft Europe’s robes of burning leaf and hill
And spill winter’s drab colours across alp and plain
Sending gifts of snow and rain
The woodcock flying before the storm
Round stacked wood to keep us warm.
