Place of baptism

I was out with the local walking group on a walk celebrating Sir Walter Raleigh who died 400 years ago today.  We started in the village where he was born East Budleigh, visiting the church to view the family pew with ornate wooden ends carved with the family crest.  We then walked along the lane he would have taken from his house (see extras) to his place of schooling.  We headed up over the common towards the house where it is thought he was baptised at the time when a Catholic monarch had just come into power and he was a Protestant so it was done in secret, there are apparently no exact records of his birth which is believed to have been in 1554.  The blip shows this house which has an ornate stained glass window in an area on the first floor where there was a small chapel.  We were fortunate enough to be allowed access into the garden where we had our lunch.  It was then a walk along the edge of the common, along the river and over the fields back to our starting point.  A wonderfully sunny day with a light cold breeze, great walking weather.  It was around 8 miles in total.
