The Breathing Tree

A week or so back I blipped the front of the new Blue Mountains Cultural Centre. Prominent in that picture was a giant wall sculpture of a leaf. One or two people expressed interest in the leaf and I undertook to find out more.

Pictured today is a close up of the sculpture showing something of how it was constructed. A nearby plaque describes it as "The Breathing Tree", a sculpture by Ken and Julia Yonetani. It offers the following explanatory text:

This work is inspired by microscopic images of stomata, the pore openings on leaves used in respiration. The images were acquired from leaves of eucalyptus trees growing near the Blue Mountains National Park.
