Memorial plaque
Otherwise known as the Death Penny. These were given to the next of kin of soldiers killed in the first world war, and my maternal granny was given this. Her father was in the Durham Light Infantry and killed at the Somme on 16th September 1916, when she was five years old. See extra.
We watched They Shall Not Grow Old on the TV in the evening. Incredibly moving, it really showed the absolute horror of it all.
