Inchgarvie Island
Well it has been some day! I left home at 8am and didn't arrive in Reading until 7pm. I was supposed to have two changes of stations during my journey, but it turned out that they were not the ones originally planned as the train from Edinburgh going south was cancelled due to flooding further down the coast. So then I was re-routed across country to the west coast and all was well until we again came across more flooding related delays.
This shot is of Inchgarvie Island taken as the train crossed the Firth of Forth Rail Bridge on the approach to Edinburgh. The castle is said to have been built in the reign of James IV c 1490 and used as a fortified state prison. The island was also used in various plans to build the railway bridge and at one stage its buildings were used to house workers and one of the cantilevers is sunk very close to it. The island is now home to fulmars, roosting cormorants and grey herons.
The three boys were delighted to see me and it was great fun to be able to read them their bedtime story. However I confess I am pretty tired now, although I have done very little except sit on my backside in three different trains all day! So my apologies for not commenting today as I am now ready to hit the hay. More adventure tomorrow!
