Ice, Bubbles and Beavers
We took a walk today as the sun was setting, giving some rather lovely shadows and a reddish light (extra). Once the sun was gone we headed down into a valley with a small stream. It was mostly frozen and in places the ice was showing its crystal structure. Here the crystals are fairly small but Jan's blip in the lake shows bigger ones.
I was attracted by the bubbles that had been trapped by the ice. The largest and elongated bubble is about 10 cm long.
The beavers had been hard at work in the stream. A lot of small trees were down, after a little more chewing one or two large trees will be down, and where there was one dam before there were now three dams, and three pools, in one 500 m stretch. The dam we'd seen a few weeks back was higher, with the pool only just remaining in the ditch, threatening to spread to the fields either side. This is where life can get dangerous for the beavers because farmers don't like flooded fields!
We'll see what the future brings...
