On The Lookout

All hell broke loose and the chickens shot out from under the cover of the cypress trees and onto the fence behind me! Nearly jumping out of my skin while lying on the floor of the fruit cage shooting a flower I rolled the best I could, being stuck underneath a blackcurrant bush, to see what had caused the commotion. Looking a bit sheepish Tilly emerged with a feather on the end of her nose - a bit of a giveaway with her innocent look.

These cream crested legbars are skittish and flighty at the best of times and even more so now. We are a chicken down from last week as a fox must have come into the garden during the day so they are far more wary and on the lookout than usual. They didn't even like me coming too near to see them tightrope walking across the top of the fence.

They are supposed to lay about 200 eggs a year but whoever wrote that is having a laugh but when we do get eggs they are the most lovely blue colour with a deep yellow yolk and the flavour is luscious!
