Winter Luxury
These three small pumpkins or winter squash are lined up, scrubbed, and ready to go into the oven for an hour to bake and be ready to be peeled tomorrow.
The heirloom seeds, started last spring, grew into these little beauties in my backyard raised beds. They were grown by the Puritans in New England long ago and named by them, "Winter Luxury" i feel sure because the rich flesh during a cold harsh winter must have seemed a luxury. The naives probably gave this seed to them as well as other seeds for vegetables that thrived in the New World. They are thought to have saved the struggling Puritans lives here.by showing them how to plant and what plants native to this area are healthy and healing.
The catalog claims Winter Luxury make the very best pies. I won't use all of the flesh for pies. I have never made a pumpkin pie from scratch so tomorrow will be a first. If it looks good enough you'll get a blip... too bad I cannot offer you a taste as well.
