Bonnie Prince Charlie tries to take Derby again
He previously tried at this time in 1745. Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite forces didn't make it past Derby, they retreated back North from here. It was the farthest south the Jacobite campaign would ever manage in what ultimately proved to be a doomed effort to reinstate a Catholic Stuart monarch to the British throne.
It was good fun watching the re-enactment on the green in front of the Cathedral and Charlie's statue. It was a total surprise event to us, we had simply gone into town for a little festive shopping when we were roused by bagpipes and passed by the marching army. We asked what was going on and followed the rebels to the green. Much better than shopping and thankful for phone cameras.
