I don't wear onesies

So many thanks to all the kind people out there in blipland who said they would miss my journal if I were forced to take a break on account of a troublesome camera. That was a very sweet thing to say. The truth is that I would really miss blipping too. I like sharing with you the things which make me happy and the things which make me cross.

You can call me old-fashioned, but as far as I am concerned if I want to take a photograph I use a camera, if I want to make a phone call or send an SMS I use a phone and if I want internet access I use a computer. This way there is no danger of accidentally flattening the battery on my phone because I have spent too long using it to take photographs or accessing blip on public transport. On public transport I look out of the window or observe my fellow passengers, and take photographs, or send text messages, or make short phone calls, but I don't access the internet.

I realise that there will come a time when it is not possible to exist in the modern world without a smartphone and that anyone who attempts to do so will be regarded as disabled. I'm good with that. I can be regarded as disabled, I'll be a lot less disabled than a person who has a single multifunction device with a flat battery.

So in exactly the same way that I wouldn't want a frying pan that doubles as a cheese grater, I nipped out to Argos this morning and came home with a Canon SX430. I decided not to spend an extra £40 on 3-year breakdown care because I expect manufacturers of anything worth buying to be ashamed if their products fail, and do something to rectify it. I believe that reputation and respect are worth so much more than slogans and marketing campaigns.

Yes I have learned that Sony do not share that belief which is why I will never ever buy another of their products, not even in a charity shop. I might be swimming against a massive tide but I am voting with my feet.

I was surprised to find that the £30 camera case designed specifically for this camera comes without any kind of strap, and so after breakfast I went out in search of something appropriate with which to make my own.
