centenary pool...

...on the must-see list for visitors to Brisbane interested in very cool architecture and a few laps!
Built in 1959 by architect James Birrell  it demonstrates the details, materials, and construction methods of a sculptural variant of Post-War International style.
A prime example of a 1950s Olympic Pool, four level diving board (extra) and Diving Pool  with touches like underwater floodlights and observation windows for coaches that were way ahead of their time.

The 'Jetson style' building (extra) was originally a restaurant with glass windows overlooking the two pools...sadly now it's a gym with 'the best views'!
The manager showed me some black and white photos from the 60s and 70s and how amazing to see the cascades (literally) of young things hurling themselves from the 10m diving board!
Now the 10m board is closed apart from use for diving practice and competitions...I was allowed up to the 5m board which was scary enough (and a far cry from being in a youngster in Penang where gangs of us also cascaded off the 10m board!)
