Carlingwark Loch
Today's the day ............................. for an SSSI
It was a misty morning today at Carlingwark Loch, a small freshwater loch lying just south of the town of Castle Douglas.
There are four artificial islets in the loch which all have evidence of fortification and settlement at some time in the past. One of them, Ash Island is thought to be a Crannog. Several archaeological finds have been retrieved from the loch including a bronze cauldron, sword and two dugout canoes. There is a footpath around it and it is popular for bird watching and fishing.
On 5 March 2012, the loch and the land around it, was designated as a Scottish Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its varied birdlife and grassland ………………...
