Going Up

As we were stopped traffic lights outside 1, West Nicolson Street I noticed that this street door was open, giving a view of the tenement stair. The building appears on the Kincaid map of 1784.
What interests me is that the stair takes off immediately inside the door rather than partway down a corridor; also that it appears the bottom step has been cut away to allow the door to open.
