Schwarzes café, Berlin
Earlier this year, the Minx and I visited Berlin and enjoyed it so much that we made up up our minds to come back before the year was out. The Minx suggested we should visit the Christmas Fairs and, simple as that, our plan was made*.
We set off from Chorley station, this morning, taking the train to the airport and enjoying a couple of glasses of mulled wine in the Escape Lounge (which is nice but would be overpriced if I didn't get access via one of the under-explored perks on my bank account).
The flight was fine, despite a little 'clear air turbulence' and getting off the plane, I found Berlin to be wonderfully cold, in the sense that it was, yes, pretty much freezing, but also still and dry. The Minx's always capable utilisation of the Maps app saw us onto a train to the Berlin Zoologischer Garten Station and thence to our hotel.
After unpacking and freshening up, we headed out to Schwarzes Café, just along the road from the hotel and chosen by the Minx as it was (allegedly) frequented by David Bowie and Iggy Pop during their stay in Berlin. (I'm not sure quite how likely this is, tbh: Bowie was on tour for most of 1978, when the café opened.)
But whether or not the unlikely couple frequented the café, It still felt like the kind of place one might have found them; elegantly run down, but serving great food and drinks to a bohemian crowd. We ate, drank, and read our books, before making our why home, heavily wrapped against the cold!
