Crossbones Graveyard

Another gentle day today. Our first planned stop was Crossbones Graveyard but we stumbled across Borough Market on our way there. Lots of interesting things for sale but most importantly there was a little independent coffee stand doing dairy free mocha!

Crossbones Graveyard was a post-medieval burial ground for prostitutes and paupers. It is thought there may be over 15,000 graves in the small plot. The Friends of Crossbones hold a memorial there on the 23rd of each month. The gates have been decorated with ribbons and offerings of rememberance. Many of the white ribbons state the name, age and date of death of someone thought to be buried in the graveyard.

For the first time that I've been there, the garden of rememberance was open so we went for a wander around there too.

From there we headed back to the market for lunch before a wander across the river to St Dunstan's in the East. Originally built around 1100 it was badly damaged in the Great Fire of London. Rather than being completely rebuilt it was repaired and a new tower and steeple added. It suffered further damage during the Blitz and now the remains are a secluded public garden.

A quick warm up in The Walrus and The Carpenter before heading to look around Covent Garden.
