Exciting news
Yes folks you have seen this before. It is the well known Arnside Railway Viaduct. It has been blipped a few hundred time, the classic view being from the top of the Knott.
So why am I blipping it again?
Well recently a grant of £50,000 was given to the Morecambe Bay Partnership ( a consortium of local authorities and economic and conservation bodies) to explore the cost and economic benefits of a footpath and cycle route hanging on the side of the viaduct..
We know that this is technically possible because when the top of the viaduct was rebuilt in 2015 it was done in such a way that a pathway could be hung on the side.
But there are problems at the northern end because a new linking footpath to Grange over Sands would have to be built along the estuary.
The connection would be an important link in the English Coastal Path. At 2,800 miles this will be the longest managed and signposted coastal footpath in the world. If they don’t finish it soon I shall be too old to walk it. It will also be an important part of the Lancashire/Cumbria Cycleway.
Up until about ten years ago many Arnside residents used to walk over the viaduct and back on Christmas day when there were no trains. But this has been firmly stopped.
It would be fun if we could do it again.
