Not looking gift horses in the mouth

We have an open house in the afternoon of New Years Eve for friends from the village. We usually get about thirty people here for several hours of chat and laughter.
We provide drink, usually Prosecco and nibbles, our visitors bring bottles, chocolates and other treats. It is unusual that these treats include Brussels Sprout flavoured crisps. Fortunately these were accompanied with the bottle of champagne and a jar of blackberries in gin. No idea what to do with the latter but I bet they will be really nice.
Once everyone had gone the house seemed full of empty bottles, dirty glasses and bowls of nibbles. It did not take us long to clear up but the recycle bin, only emptied this morning, was three quarters full again.
Everyone tells us  how much they enjoy this gathering and that it is a good way to end the year. Whilst this is pleasant to know we actually do it just because we enjoy it.
