Low tide at Tongland

Today's the day …………………….. to expose

Cold and frosty here today with temperatures hovering around zero and frost on the fields all day.

Water level in the River Dee was very low as I went for a brisk walk along its banks.  It is tidal up to this point - and at low tide, a fair amount of the rocky river bed is exposed.  The difference between low and high tides is around 7 metres or 21ft - an enormous amount - and so, it looks a completely different place when the tide is in as you can see here.

There's another factor which can also make a difference.  Sometimes, the gates on the reservoir further upstream behind the Tongland Power Station are opened to allow excess water to flow downstream.  That usually happens at low tide - and produces an additional torrent of water.

It's a constantly changing and fascinating river to keep an eye on ………………...
