Spiked Apple

The birds are at our apples.
While looking for a little critter to photograph for Tiny Tuesday I noticed several bits of apple stuck on the sharp spikes of this plant beneath the tree.
The birds have obviously taken their usual couple of bites and then let the rest drop. I wouldn't have thought the plant would be sharp and strong enough to catch and hold it but there you are. 

I did find a nice grasshopper but this is something different and fairly tiny.
