The Hepworth
We headed to The Hepworth in Wakefield, our first visit. Barbara Hepworth,, the renowned sculptor, was born in the town. The Hepworth opened in 2011, next to the River Calder. Designed by David Chipperfield, it's a good place to go on the greyest of days. Wakefield's art collection is pretty impressive. And I can recommend the café.
It's amazing that two of the 20th century's greatest sculptors - Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore - were born 5 miles from each other. Moore was five years her senior, although they met each other when they both attended Leeds School of Art. Both were modernists, but in different ways. And both could draw. On the walls at the Hepworth are some great Moore lithographs of Stonehenge, and of coalminers (the "Bevan Boys").
The blip is a small Hepworth piece, with behind it a painting of her from the 1920's.
