Another week over

First of the year, and somehow I’ve got through it.

Have those of you overseas been following the stellar career of Chris Grayling? A man who gives hope to the clueless and incompetent everywhere.

There can be no greater emblem of the failure of this government other than that he remains in it. His latest wheeze, giving a ferry contract to a company with no ships, no track record as a company at all, and apparently run by people connected closely enough to make any reasonable person flag up a potential conflict of interest, is his best yet.

In more reasonable times, three years ago, say, he!d be hounded out of office by the press and quite likely find himself under investigation. Now things like this are just shrugged off as the new normal.

I miss the recent past when some sort of standards seemed to apply.
