Tigrayan Lodge

This is a photo of our friends Erle and Sue, our guide Birhan, and the staff of one of the community run lodges atop a plateau near Adigrat, in Tigray. The lodges are built and staffed by people from surrounding farming communities. Working at the lodge as a cook, cleaner, donkey herder, or guard provides much needed supplementary income for local people. Lodges are rustic, with no modern amenities, but clean and comfortable. The food is locally sourced. We had beyanetu for supper, a variety of vegetable or legume stews, served on injera. The lodges are built by community members out of stone, in the style of local houses. Rooms surround a courtyard. Most are metres from a sheer cliff edge. It was an enjoyable stay! You could contact TESFA tours if you want to arrange a trek.
