Crooklands to Duke's Bridge
The glimmers of sun trying to peak through the clouds were short lived as I resumed my trek down the canal starting at Crooklands Bridge#166 and finishing at Duke's bridge #155. The Blip is just North of the M6 at the glamourously named Milness Culvert #163A, looking back at Millness Bridge #164. The culvert takes the water under the M6. The canal here is right next to the A65. There is a fairly wide bridge taking the M6 over the A65.If they had spent a little bit more money and made the bridge a little bit wider it would have spanned the canal as well. So short sighted. In the summer boat trips can be taken on this bit of the canal, north up to Stainton on the boat you can see over by the bridge.
Another disappointment was when the canal hit the A 65 again bit further on. Road widening has removed the original bridge. There was a new bridge for the tow path but the canal went through another culvert. Why didn't they just build a wider bridge to include the canal (extra) .
I went under 11 bridges and over 2 aqueducts. Most of the bridges are identical so not that interesting. Farleton Aqueduct #160 though warrants another extra because the engineering was unusual . It must be a very full beck because as well as a normal aqueduct, an overflow was designed so that the excess water can flow into the channel you can see and disappears down a steep shute to the right into the beck at a lower level. Very clever these canal engineers.
