Driftwood

Thanks to mysterious tides and currents, the Pacific Coast of South Island (in fact, the Tasman Coast too) always has driftwood, ranging from whole trees to little branches.

Local children and youths eschew building sandcastles in favour of creating large pyres, although I’ve never seen one alight.
