Spontaneous speech (or not)
We had snow this morning – proper snow, but no one else did- just us. The only snow in Carlisle was that which was still on our car as we arrived at the station for the train to Newcastle.
I was going anyway, but Gordon decided to come with me – I think the offer of one meal for £1 with another one at Carluccio’s was an offer too good to miss.
I went to an excellent lecture/talk/discussion session on Speech into Writing. Discussing the many ways that spontaneous speech or conversation differs from more formal speech was lively, and often hilarious, as we thought of all the things we do as we talk casually. Then to think how writers convert this into their work, be it stories, plays, novels etc. was fascinating and quite challenging. Our tutor had provided some thought-provoking examples. Just the kind of session that I come out of thinking – that’s why I come all this way on a cold train (the Carlisle/Newcastle trains are very cold!)
