Bilbao Guggenheim Atrium

The grand central area* of the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Gehry. I blipped the exterior yesterday; the extra shows the entrance plaza. Notice that the plaza has the same beige surface (probably marble) as the atrium.  We spent five hours in the museum, including an excellent 3-course lunch in the more modest (relatively :) of its two restaurants. Our main objective was the Alberto Giacometti exhibition announced in orange above the entrance; it is large and very comprehensive--especially strong on his surrealist period, 1924 to World War II. Most impressive otherwise was an immense installation conceived by Richard Serra for the museum's inauguration 21 years ago--it seems as long as a  football field (and probably is). Altogether a wonderful day, with a museum experience like no other for us.
