Mount Eden
The volcanic cone of Mount Eden is Auckland's highest point. In volcanic terms it is long extinct, and the grassy crater is over 50m deep. The figures walking around the rim of the crater in this photo give you an idea of its size.
Auckland sits on top of a large volcanic field that has produced around 53 cones in the last 140,000 years. You can usually see a grassy volcanic slope from wherever you stand in the area.
Today's extra is from Devonport, a ferry ride across the harbour. To the left is another volcanic cone, North Head.
