Day 9 Red sand in the sunset
I have never seen sand this colour anywhere before. We drove about 40 miles from Tirunelveli to see cashew nut bushes, like the one in the centre of the image. Sadly the season is not for a few months yet so no nuts to be found. They grow in this area where the sand is like this, it's a really deep, rich, rusty red and quite coarse, but the colour is really remarkable.
From there we drove to Jerusalem! I knew there was a Nazareth in the area but it turns out there is also a Jerusalem and a Bethlehem too. The missionaries in the early 19th century were very keen on establishing settlements in this area, it's very fertile and they improved upon this by creating canals and lakes. The church in Jerusalem was built in 1802 and renovated in 1985.
We also visited a couple of smaller villages, the church in the extra has a regular congregation of around 10-15. It's tiny but very friendly, we were hosted and escorted around by the man on the left in the extra who gave us vadai - a sort of spicey fried bun, coffee and some murrukku which is spiral/wheel shaped piped dough which is fried, it's crispy, savoury, crunchy and delicious.
