Kilnaruane Pillar Stone

Milder and sunnier and I had a quick yomp up to survey the Kilruane Stone. The light was strong and the shadows everywhere I didn't want them but what an impressive thing this is. On a hillock with views out to Bantry Bay, the remains of an ecclesiastical site including this magnificent pillar stone. Or it may be the remains of a high cross for around it are scattered all sorts of blocks of stone, possibly arms of the cross. What it's really famous for are the carvings , now sadly getting more faint every year - rams with their horns locked, various saints, Celtic knots and a wonderful ship ascending sideways to heaven. It dates from the 7/8th centuries. Should it be left there? Should it have some kind of protection? Should it be removed to somewhere safe and a replica left? Difficult.
