Iconic Memorial
The ruin of Holyrood Church on Southampton’s High Street is as much part of the identity of the city, as the ancient city walls, and is indelibly entwined with its maritime history.
The church itself, destroyed by the wartime blitz of 1940, dates back to the 14th century, but fittingly today is dedicated as a memorial to seafarers of the Merchant Navy, and appropriately symbolised by the anchor set in the pavement at the entrance.
Inside the ruins, under the tower is a memorial fountain, erected in 1912–13 for those who lost their lives in the sinking of the Titanic
The ruins themselves are scheduled as an ancient monument.[9]
