Kirkcudbrightshire River Dee

There are many historical references to the River Dee in Kirkcudbrightshire as being famous for its salmon and trout.
But the coming of the Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme in the 1930s to produce electricity along its length from the northern hills near Carsphairn to Tongland, where the Dee enters the Solway Firth - put an end to much of that. It's not surprising since there are six power stations, eight dams and numerous tunnels, aqueducts and pipelines to contend with. Although four fish ladders with resting pools were created to enable salmon to return to their spawning grounds, fishing enthusiasts maintain that the measures are insufficiently effective.
This is the stretch of the Dee looking downstream from the Tongland Reservoir towards the final Power Station of the Scheme ………………….
